The FATE Experiment

Session 3 - GM's Point of View

Last night was short and a bit chaotic. We railroaded straight through to the goal with little story on the way. Because of that I thought it would be a good idea to talk a little about what makes good literature, well, good.

First lets start with character. Every great tale had at least one personality at it’s core. The best of which are dynamic, meaning they change and grow as they experience the story as a whole. Static characters are flat, as they always remain the same. However, this generally makes them good for plot as non important characters and fluff. In a nutshell, a good character adds to the story, a static one is hardly more than a set piece.

Plot, though very important for a good story, is overstated. The truth be told, there really aren’t that many to choose from. It is unfortunate that this is commonly touted when people refer to literature. Keeping the plot in mind, though, does help move the story to it’s conclusion.

For roleplaying purposes, conflict is likely the most important aspect of a game. In any story worth reading there is always an antagonist. Period. It doesn’t always mean there is an epic bad guy, mind you. Often the adversary can be people, but it could just as easily be nature or an entire organization. If you do not have good conflict you will have a flat and boring story. People will soon begin to long for something to do. Since we are playing FATE we need to keep in mind that conflict is written into the mechanics of the system.

Lastly, this isn’t a video game. We are not trying to win. Just because you see the goal at the end of the tunnel doesn’t mean you should just try and get there. The fun of this style of game is the journey it takes to get there. I am thinking this week coming will spell the natural end for this story and I am not going to try and force more out of it. Kat is talking about running a pirate game, again in FATE, and I will turn over the reigns to her. However, keep these characters in mind. I am sure there is a lot more chance for adventure in the ravished world they are in. For next week lets try to slow down a little and enjoy the story we are weaving. Keep up the good role-playing, I have some curve balls I think I am going to throw in, and lets have a great time this coming week.

Prelude to Session 3

As I text people earlier I have offered a pair of FATE points to push the story south through the Ukraine which is under United Arab Emirate control.

You are north of Kiev in Chernobyl. I have intentionally not set a location for the submarine you are supposed to meet up with because I would rather see it develop naturally as you travel. Keep in mind I have already added a couple of Aspects to the Ukraine and they are free to be tagged by anyone for the normal FATE point. Other’s will crop up as we play, I’m sure. Also keep in mind that I linked the CIA Fact Book for Ukraine and you should feel free to browse it if you like and take things from it for Invocations and Declarations. There is a map on the locations wiki page as well.

Agent Field Report; date-unclear

##Note: Although this post is coming between our 2nd and 3rd sessions, it is a belated recap our of 1st session, from the point of view of who we now know as R. Lattimer.

Feild Report
While I’m not sure why, I feel the need to record what has happened. This moment of calm seem a good enough time as any. Perhaps I have a superior officer waiting for my reports. That seems right. While I’m sure such details as date and mission number should be included here, I still can’t remember my own name, so you’ll have to bare with me.

Our story, as far as I can recall, begins in a sterile medical room, waking in the company of two other people whom, like myself, seemed to have no memory of who or where we were nor how or why we were there. After some poking around, the woman with us found a doorway, set flush with wall, leading down a corridor. At this point, she seem to have some intimate knowledge of the building we were in. We came into a second room, mush like the on we woke in, however the occupants of these beds had been chemically mummified. The sight of the corpses seem to break through my memory block and I knew I had handled many bodies, perhaps as a mortician at this facility.

Beyond a disheveled laboratory (where the others recalled medical training) we discovered a level 5 quarantine corridor. I knew something… unsettling was at the far end so when the lady doctor when to investigate, I naturally followed as backup, reaching to ready a sidearm that wasn’t there. It was something I had learned at Glynco, which I don’t belive trains morticians. The body we found in quarantine had been further ravaged by whatever had caused this, although evidence pointed to the effects being less progressed. The holy-unnatural state of the corpse turned my stomach, resulting in a conditioned desire to cool off in the break-room.

There we found the TV was still working, if only receiving audio. Reports of the continuing war ushered a surge of memories for each of us, reminding us of the project we were working on: a counter-agent for a contagion that resulted from the last batch of personnel-reinforcement experiments. The contagion was reaching an airborne state and as a hail-Mary attempt, the staff tested the most recent formulas on themselves. Luckily for us, ours seems to have been successful. Unfortunately, it seems to be the only one. The doctors have research notes that can be used to recreate the serum, but they seem incomplete and in the prior chaos have been jumbled with notes on other (apparently unsuccessful) formulas.

As our memories return (temporary amnesia seems to be the most prominent side effect of the “cure”) so do our apatites. While discovering the state of the world is still a top priority, I believe our next goal will be to find if there is anything salvageable left in the cafeteria.

Dear Diary,

This day started out with me and two men in a while room. We found the revolving door by pulling the leaver on the hospital bed. That door led us unknowingly to my sisters died body (at the time I had no knowledge of this since no one could remember anything.) When I placed my hand on the ;hand pad it triggered a memory of a lab. There I remembered an explosion. Still unsure what happened. After reading my notes I discovered that something got out and went wrong and now people are dying. As of now no one knows how long we were out but we took our antidote on 8/7/2027. We found the TV in the lounge there was no picture but we did here “There is no change in the war.” That is when we realized an epidemic had started a war. After this long confusing experience I still have no name but my sister is died and my brother-in-law and one other man is all that is left at this facility.

Session 3

Not sure what is going to happen this week since Kevin is currently in the hospital. (He did pretty good, all in all, since we have been basically in a plugged chimney for a couple weeks here in Yakima.) I have plenty of room to have him “work” with Beth for a session if he can’t make it. It would make it a small and intimate game, but there is a certain charm to that. As of right now, I am thinking we will be playing at my house so we don’t have to run out to Selah for no real reason since Chad isn’t into a game that has actual “Role” playing and there isn’t anything for him to min-max:D Don’t forget, but writing something useful on here you will have a nice juicy FATE point waiting for you at the start of the session.

Declaration and Invoking

If you would like to declare information or invoke Aspects and Skills in between sessions just text me and we will try to work something out. They should be smaller and not game breaking unless everyone agrees on them. Otherwise, I really don’t mind letting the game progress some while we are not actively playing.

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
